Project Requirements

Design a set of promotional postcards to be mailed out over several weeks prior to the opening, creating a narrative reflective of the play's plot as a primer to the performance. The postcards must include abstract photography to portray the play's themes. The subject matter of the photography should be "unrecognizable" in the final product.

The Process

Sleuth is a 1970 play written by Anthony Shaffer that focuses on a mystery writer tries to toy with his with his wife’s new lover, but his jealous deceptions spiral into dangerous schemes. The themes of jealousy, deception, and revenge were expressed through color and low depth of field macro photography across each card. The color of each photo was manipulated through duotones and layered with typography to create an unsettling atmosphere."

All 3 cards together spell out the name of the play, adding to the themes of deception. Having any one card does not tell the whole story, but much like the play, seeing it all in the end puts the pieces together for the audience.

These promotional postcards have a short companion video that showcases the same color systems and photo treatments in motion, and set to music.
